Pregnancy asks a lot of your body in a short space of time, and back or pelvic pain is one of the most common physical complaints along the way. If you’re finding it harder to roll over in bed, get out of the car, or stand for long, you’re far from alone — and there are gentle, practical ways to feel more comfortable.
This article explains why pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain happens, how chiropractic care approaches associated discomfort and altered function, and how we keep care safe and appropriate at our Carindale clinic.
Why pregnancy can be hard on your back and pelvis
Several normal changes of pregnancy combine to load the lower back and pelvis:
- Postural and weight changes — as your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward, increasing the curve of the lower back and the demand on supporting muscles.
- Ligament changes — hormones increase the flexibility of ligaments to prepare the body for birth, which can leave some joints — particularly in the pelvis — feeling less stable.
- Changing movement patterns — everyday movements like walking, climbing stairs, and turning in bed can become uncomfortable.
Two of the most common presentations are pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic girdle pain (PGP) — discomfort around the front or back of the pelvis, sometimes felt in the hips, groin, or buttocks. Both are common, and both are generally considered musculoskeletal — which is where supportive, comfort-focused care can play a role.
How chiropractic care is implemented during pregnancy
Care during pregnancy focuses on comfort, movement, and function — helping you move and rest more easily through a demanding time. Depending on your assessment, care may aim to:
- ease discomfort in the lower back and pelvis
- support more comfortable movement and daily function
- address posture and how your body is carrying the changing load
- provide practical advice for sleep positions and daily activities
Keeping care gentle and safe
Comfort and safety guide everything during pregnancy. In practice that means:
- gentle, low-force techniques — at Brisbane Posture and Performance Chiropractic our approach centres on Advanced BioStructural Correction™ (ABC™), a structural technique that can be applied gently and is tailored to what’s comfortable and appropriate for you at each stage
- ongoing communication — we check in regularly and modify care based on how you’re feeling
We also see your care as part of a team. We’re glad to work alongside your GP, midwife, or obstetrician, and we’ll recommend you check with them where appropriate.
