Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

BPPV is a variety of vertigo arising from a condition in the inner ear, specifically the semi-circular canals. It causes a feeling that the world is spinning or dizziness as a result of movement, usually in the head and neck. These symptoms are often accompanied by nystagmus and nausea.

Overview

On occasions clients at Brisbane Posture and Performance will present with neck pain or stiffness, viral symptoms and decreased balance and coordination to accompany the vertigo. Small crystals called otoliths in the inner ear’s semicircular canals cause a blockage, stopping the usual flow in the inner ear. Symptoms often resolve within 1-2 days. Depending on the origin of the symptoms, people can be affected for months from vertigo.

Often medications from doctors will be prescribed to help with symptoms until the physical cause of the condition settles. Brisbane Posture and Performance can perform a range of manoeuvres to assist with musculoskeletal issues that can contribute to BPPV.
