What Is Advanced BioStructural Correction™?

If you’ve been looking for a chiropractor in Brisbane’s southside, you’ll have noticed that clinics describe their approach in different ways. It’s a reasonable question to ask what those differences actually mean before you book.

This article explains what Advanced BioStructural Correction™ (ABC™) involves, what the reasoning behind it is, and how it compares to other approaches — so you can make an informed decision.

The underlying idea

ABC™ is a chiropractic technique system built around a specific proposition: that some mechanical strains in the spine can be corrected by the body itself, and some cannot.

The reasoning goes like this. Your body has muscles that can pull a vertebra back into position if it has shifted forward. But there are no muscles positioned to pull a vertebra forward if it has shifted backwards. Where that occurs, the proposition is that the body cannot self-correct, and instead adapts around it — changing how you stand, how you carry your head, and how load distributes through the rest of your structure.

ABC™ practitioners aim to identify and address those specific strains, with the goal of allowing the body to unwind its own compensations over time.

What this means in practice

Three things follow from that reasoning, and they’re what people tend to notice as different:

The focus is structural rather than symptomatic. Assessment looks at how you’re positioned and loaded as a whole, not only at the area that hurts. If you come in with shoulder pain, we’ll still be looking at how your ribcage and spine are positioned, because that’s where shoulder mechanics start.

Contacts are usually made from front to back on specific segments. The direction of correction follows from the reasoning above.

Change is expected to be progressive. Because the model involves the body unwinding accumulated compensations, care is generally framed as a process rather than a single intervention.

How does ABC™ compare to other chiropractic approaches?

There’s no single “standard” chiropractic technique — the profession includes a range of approaches, including diversified manual adjusting, drop-piece techniques, instrument-assisted methods, and mobilisation-based care. Many practitioners combine several.

What distinguishes ABC™ is mainly its assessment framework and its emphasis on whole-structure mechanics rather than segment-by-segment symptom chasing.

We want to be transparent on one point. ABC™ is a defined technique system with a coherent internal rationale, but it does not have the same volume of published clinical trial evidence behind it that some broader interventions — such as general spinal manipulative therapy or exercise-based care for low back pain — have accumulated. We think you’re entitled to know that when you’re choosing where to go. What we can tell you is what the approach involves, what it aims to do, and what we’ve observed clinically. What we can’t tell you is that it will outperform another approach for you specifically, because that isn’t something the current evidence base supports anyone claiming.

What happens at your first visit?

A first appointment focuses on working out whether this is the right approach for you:

  1. History — your symptoms, how they started, previous injuries, general health, and what you’re trying to get back to
  2. Examination — postural and structural assessment, movement testing, and relevant orthopaedic and neurological screening
  3. Screening for red flags — identifying anything that needs medical assessment or imaging rather than chiropractic care
  4. Discussion — what we found, whether ABC™ is appropriate, what care would realistically involve, and what alternatives exist

If your presentation isn’t suited to this approach, we’ll say so and help you find the right referral. That’s a better outcome for you than starting care that isn’t going to help.
